Tonight from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will host a public workshop at PS 235K Brooklyn (5811 Ditmas Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11203) as part of the next phase of public engagement for the Interborough Express (IBX) light rail project. The IBX represents the largest transit expansion project undertaken by the MTA in over 50 years, and the first entirely new rail line since World War II.
The 14-mile light rail line will connect Bay Ridge, Brooklyn to Jackson Heights, Queens, along the existing LIRR-owned Bay Ridge Branch and CSX-owned Fremont Secondary freight line, connecting to up to 17 different subway lines and the Long Island Rail Road. Over 160,000 daily riders are expected to use the IBX, translating to roughly 72,000 fewer vehicle miles traveled in passenger cars per day, or 21.8 million less per year, resulting in more than 13,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions avoided annually.
Tonight's workshop will feature family-friendly interactive activities where attendees can engage directly with the IBX project team and share feedback on station and train design, with MTA representatives on hand to answer questions and discuss comments and concerns. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement will be available for comment in fall 2026, with additional input opportunities in early 2027 once the draft preliminary design is released.
