MTA Hosts Public Workshop Tonight for Bay Ridge's IBX Light Rail Project

Tonight from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will host a public workshop at PS 235K Brooklyn (5811 Ditmas Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11203) as part of the next phase of public engagement for the Interborough Express (IBX) light rail project. The IBX represents the largest transit expansion project undertaken by the MTA in over 50 years, and the first entirely new rail line since World War II.

The 14-mile light rail line will connect Bay Ridge, Brooklyn to Jackson Heights, Queens, along the existing LIRR-owned Bay Ridge Branch and CSX-owned Fremont Secondary freight line, connecting to up to 17 different subway lines and the Long Island Rail Road. Over 160,000 daily riders are expected to use the IBX, translating to roughly 72,000 fewer vehicle miles traveled in passenger cars per day, or 21.8 million less per year, resulting in more than 13,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions avoided annually.

Tonight's workshop will feature family-friendly interactive activities where attendees can engage directly with the IBX project team and share feedback on station and train design, with MTA representatives on hand to answer questions and discuss comments and concerns. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement will be available for comment in fall 2026, with additional input opportunities in early 2027 once the draft preliminary design is released.

Brooklyn Man Sentenced to 15 Years to Life for Murder of Mother in Bay Ridge Apartment

A Brooklyn man was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the murder of his mother in her Bay Ridge apartment, according to recent court records from the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office. The case represents one of several recent major criminal proceedings in Brooklyn.

Separately, a Brownsville man who acted as a serial killer within his own apartment building recently pleaded guilty to murder charges for killing three elderly women who trusted him for help with repairs and errands. The defendant admitted to fatally stabbing one victim, stomping on the neck and chest of a second victim, and strangling a third victim inside their apartments at the Carter G. Woodson Houses during incidents between 2015 and 2021.

Current crime statistics show Brooklyn's overall serious crime rate at 12.2 per 1,000 residents in 2022, with a property crime rate of 7.6 per 1,000 residents, compared to the citywide crime rate of 9 per 1,000 residents. Violent crimes in Brooklyn totaled 10,738 incidents in 2019, representing 30% of New York City's total, with the borough's violent crime rate at 4.16 that year.

Brooklyn FC returns to Maimonides Park this Saturday night, May 9, following a two-game road stretch, set to host Loudoun United FC at 7:00 PM ET, as Brooklyn looks to capitalize on home support and build momentum in front of its fans.

Brooklyn FC has shown flashes of strong form in recent weeks, securing two wins in its last five matches, both by 3-0 scorelines, demonstrating its ability to dominate when clicking in the final third, though most recently Brooklyn dropped a narrow 3-2 result on the road against Miami FC. Leading the charge for Brooklyn is 22-year-old forward Markus Anderson, who has been in standout form with four goals and two assists over his last seven appearances, supported by 19-year-old loanee CJ Olney Jr., who has contributed two assists and continues to play an important role in linking play in the attacking third.

In baseball, the Brooklyn Cyclones dropped their series finale with Frederick 4-1 on Sunday afternoon, as three Keys pitchers held the Brooklyn bats to just two hits. The Cyclones have dropped all five series to start the 2026 campaign and will open a two-week road trip with a six-game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods starting Wednesday. Looking ahead to the NBA Draft Lottery, Brooklyn has a 52.1% chance to land in the top four of the 2026 class, headlined by prospects AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, and Cameron Boozer, representing a strong shot at adding a generational prospect to the rebuild.

NYC Opens Five New Public Schools in Bronx and Queens for 2026-2027 School Year

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York City Public Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels announced Monday the opening of five new public schools set to begin operations this September for the 2026-2027 academic year, spanning the Bronx and Queens to address capacity needs while expanding access to District 75 programs for students with disabilities.

The new schools include the Academy of Cultural Excellence in Long Island City (Pre-K to Grade 5), The Bronx School of Hip-Hop in Claremont (Grades 9-12), Queens Academy for Innovative Learning in Astoria (Grades 6-12), and West Q Elementary in Woodside (K-5). Officials said the initiative is designed to improve access to high-quality education and address capacity needs in growing communities, with Mayor Mamdani stating that "Innovation, excellence and art are woven into the fabric of this city."

The announcement comes as the city's public school system continues to face declining enrollment and broader structural pressure, with a recent analysis from the nonprofit Citizens Budget Commission finding enrollment has fallen by about 160,000 students since 2020. Broader demographic shifts, including lower birth rates and outmigration, have further reduced the number of school-age children, leaving many schools with significantly smaller student populations and forcing the city to confront difficult decisions about school structure and resource allocation.

NYC Council Speaker Julie Menin Leads Budget Response to Mayor Mamdani's Preliminary Proposal

The New York City Council voted during its 2026 Charter Meeting to elect Julie Menin as Speaker, with Speaker Menin taking the helm of the city's legislative body. This week, the New York City Council published its response to Mayor Zohran Mamdani's Preliminary Budget proposal, offering an alternative budgeting approach, and launched new Budget Dashboards as an innovative public tool to make the City's budget more accessible.

At the borough level, Linda Sarsour remains a close ally of Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a key leader in the Muslim community in Brooklyn and beyond. The Palestinian American activist has welcomed a shift in New York City in which support for Palestinians has become less of a political liability, and has touted the role of a Council on American-Islamic Relations-backed political action committee in backing Mamdani for mayor.

Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso announced one month after easily winning reelection that he would run for Congress when Rep. Nydia Velázquez unexpectedly decided to retire. The Williamsburg native has deep roots in North Brooklyn, helping found the New Kings Democrats political club and serving as a New York City Council member for two terms. Speaker Menin also announced the appointment of Nathan Toth to lead the Council's Finance Division as part of ongoing leadership appointments.

Café Bar J.F. is set to open tomorrow, May 13, at 50 Withers Street, bringing a neighborhood-focused tavern with seasonal cooking to Williamsburg. The spacious location offers a warm and approachable environment for local gatherings, focusing on great service and a shared love for the community.

Other recent April openings include Chama Mama, which officially opened at 113 Franklin Street in Greenpoint, bringing authentic Georgian cuisine to the neighborhood with famous khachapuri (traditional cheesy bread), pkhali (walnut-based veggie spreads), Georgian dumplings, and hearty stews with both meat and vegetarian options.

The highly anticipated Prince Street Pizza finally debuted in Brooklyn at 271 Smith Street on April 23, bringing its cult-favorite spicy square pies and easy grab-and-go slices to Carroll Gardens, though early reports suggest lines at peak times with the payoff being portable lunch options perfect for families on the move. An iconic Carroll Gardens institution, the 121-year-old Ferdinando's Focacceria, is getting a new lease on life as the team from neighborhood favorite Cafe Spaghetti reimagines the space as Bar Ferdinando, a new Italian restaurant and bar with updated takes on Sicilian classics and a welcoming bar room.

MTA Explores Alternative Funding for $5.5 Billion IBX Light Rail Project

The MTA is exploring alternatives to federal funding for the $5.5 billion proposed Interborough Express light rail line between Brooklyn and Queens to circumvent President Trump's propensity for meddling in New York's ambitious infrastructure goals, as federal funding for transit projects has become uncertain under the current administration.

MTA Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber told the MTA board's capital construction committee on Monday that "Normally a project of this magnitude, a brand new rail line that will serve 160,000 to 200,000 people, would be federally funded," but acknowledged that "opportunity may be a little bit of a lift for us, so we are developing different strategies to fund it."

In his second term, President Trump has tried to turn off federal funding for work on the Second Avenue subway and the Gateway Tunnel project, despite money already being earmarked by Congress, with the MTA only recently clawing back $60 million for Second Avenue Subway after the state sued the federal government. The 2025-2029 MTA capital plan includes $2.75 billion for the light rail project, funding for half of the total cost, with some funding potentially coming from state sources after Governor Hochul redirected $1.3 billion from the Penn Station project directly to the MTA capital plan.

🏗 Housing & Development

Brooklyn Housing Market Stabilizes with $850,000 Median Price as Spring Season Opens

The Brooklyn housing market spring 2026 is balancing an $850,000 median sale price with 55 days on market and 3.8 months of supply, a setup that still tilts toward sellers but no longer punishes patient buyers, with borough-wide prices climbing 4.2% year over year through April 2026.

The Brooklyn condo market shows a split, with Manhattan-adjacent luxury condos in DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights holding or gaining value through Q1 2026, while mid-tier condo product in Crown Heights, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and parts of Williamsburg softened, with rising inventory and several developer-held units offering closing-cost credits. The borough condo median of $1.1 million is up 2.8% year over year, but that headline number hides meaningful weakness in the $700,000 to $1.2 million band.

Brooklyn brownstones in the prime row-house belt (Park Slope, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens) trade between $1.4 million and $3 million in spring 2026, with restored, single-family configurations clearing $4 million in tight blocks, while Manhattan townhouses in comparable neighborhoods trade meaningfully higher, often $5 million and up. Forecasts for May through August 2026 call for the borough median holding between $850,000 and $880,000, with mortgage rates ranging 5.85% to 6.30%, and days on market continuing to compress in southern Brooklyn detached product to a 35 to 45 day median.
